But, in the case of grandson, living with paternal grandmother was not really a good idea.
Molly Fox of Cambridge University and colleagues analyzed birth and death data from seven populations in Asia, South America, Europe, and Africa who lived in different periods to go back to the 17th century.
In the study, they observed three cases of infant death in first year of life. Researchers found no difference in infants of women and men, depending on whether paternal grandmother or mother who were present at the beginning of their lives.
"The presence of the paternal grandmother in all seven populations have adverse effect on the grandson, because their presence is associated with increased mortality (death rate)," Fox said as quoted by the Times of India.
Meanwhile, six of seven populations, showed that the presence of the paternal grandmother in the early life of her baby, has beneficial effects in terms of reducing the risk of death. "This is the difference between a granddaughter and grandson," he said.
This study only look at infant mortality rates and according to Fox, this mechanism is still mysterious. The results, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B this could help explain the evolution of female longevity is: grandmother lived with her son to help keep their grandchildren.
